Man charged with attempted murder, reckless driving after 50km police chase

The attempted murder charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine upon conviction.

A lorry driver who evaded a roadblock and was involved in a 50km chase before trying to ram a traffic policeman’s motorcycle five days ago was charged in the magistrates’ court here today.

Hasrulnizam Hasim, 21, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

He was accused of attempting to murder Nur Hafisi Amarudin, 34, by trying to ram the traffic policeman’s motorcycle into the opposite lane at Km5 Jalan Serting Tengah-Keratong, in Jempol between 12.30pm and 1.15pm on April 9.

The charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine, upon conviction.

Hasrulnizam was also charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 with driving recklessly at Km9 Jalan Bahau-Kemayan at 12.25pm on April 9.

If convicted, he could be imprisoned for up to five years and fined between RM5,000 and RM15,000.

He could also have his driving licence cancelled or revoked for up to five years.

Hasrulnizam was also accused of careless and inconsiderate driving at Km9 Jalan Bahau-Kemayan at 12.25pm on April 9.

The charge was framed under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act which provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000 and imprisonment of not more than 12 months, upon conviction.

The court set bail of RM18,000 for all three charges and fixed May 6 for remention.

Hasrulnizam was also told to report to the nearest police station once a month.
