Yesterday, it was reported that the 100 sq ft storage facility belonging to the environmental quality division of Cenviro Sdn Bhd was destroyed in the fire.
State entrepreneurship, human resources, climate change, cooperatives and consumerism committee chairman S Veerapan estimated the company’s loss at RM8 million.
“I was informed that the incident occurred in the scheduled waste storage area, and the fire was triggered by a chemical reaction involving about 160kg of chloride chemicals kept there.
“The authorities are monitoring the air and water conditions, and the public need not worry as everything is under control,” he told reporters here today.
Veerapan said it was the third fire at the centre, after similar incidents in 2015 and 2019.
Cenviro Group managing director Johari Jalil said all the 86 workers at the factory were safe.
He said the fire, which started in a remote storage area, was brought under control by the Negeri Sembilan fire and rescue department and the Cenviro Hazmat and firefighting team at about 8.20pm.
“The fire only affected a portion of our warehouse capacity and did not impact the daily operations of our waste management centre,” he said.
He said the Cenviro emergency response team had activated the emergency procedures, with the assistance of 66 personnel from four fire and rescue stations.
