PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reminded immigration and customs personnel to perform with discipline and integrity during a surprise visit to the Penang International Airport yesterday.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said he went to the airport to personally inspect its facilities and talk to the officers on duty, especially those from the immigration and customs department.

“I (told them) that everyone has to perform their duties with full discipline and integrity,” he said.

“Make sure there are no more instances of misconduct among personnel that could result in billions of ringgit in losses to the country.”

Last week, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Azam Baki said the country had lost about RM2 billion in taxes since 2017 to a smuggling syndicate operating at the KLIA Cargo terminal in Sepang.

Azam said 34 customs officers were detained from March 11 to 25 after being suspected of receiving more than RM4.7 million in bribes to allow undeclared imports and goods to enter the country without inspection.

The syndicate was believed to be involved in smuggling tobacco, cigarettes, alcohol, health products and vehicle spare parts at the terminal.

He said 27 people and company owners had also been arrested for protecting and facilitating the syndicate’s operations.

Following this, Anwar said the immigration department and the Inland Revenue Board are among several agencies being monitored.

Two policemen on remand for extortion in Johor

In Johor Bahru, two policemen were arrested yesterday for allegedly extorting RM2,000 from a man at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI).

In a Bernama report today, Johor police chief M Kumar said the two policemen who were on duty at BSI were arrested at 1.50pm following a report lodged by the victim, who claimed he was blackmailed by the duo on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old victim claimed he was going through an immigration check at the BSI when the two policemen arrested him because of a criminal offence and demanded RM2,000 to avoid being detained.

Kumar said the two policemen are being investigated for extortion under Section 385 of the Penal Code and have been remanded until April 8.
