PETALING JAYA:
Telegram has given their full cooperation to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in supervising the social media platform, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said Telegram agreed to take down content or channels over issues related to online security, such as scams, and online gambling, Bernama reported.

“But one of the problems we face is when one channel is closed, another channel is opened. Online gambling operators are often very creative.

“So, we are also discussing more sustainable ways to combat scams and online gambling not only on the Telegram application but also on many other social media and online messaging applications,” he told reporters after an event in his constituency, Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to security issues, Fahmi said Telegram had also agreed to remove content that violated the Copyright Act.

“For example, (full episodes of) the ‘Layang-Layang Perkahwinan’ television series can be viewed via the application,” he said, according to Bernama.

On March 2, Fahmi met with Telegram chief executive officer Pavel Durov in Dubai to discuss issues involving the social media platform, which boasts approximately 15 million users in Malaysia.

Fahmi was reported to have said that his meeting with Durov involved the regulatory issue of the platform, new technology and artificial intelligence.
