BATU GAJAH:
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) will refurbish 18 train sets for electric train service (ETS) and KTM Komuter, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

Loke said his ministry intends to increase the number of ETS sets to raise the frequency of services.

“We hope the contract (to refurbish the train sets) can be awarded within the next few months.

“Some of these (trains) need major overhaul and refurbishment to be put back into service,” he said at a press conference here.

Loke said this when asked if KTMB had plans to add ETS carriages to avoid passenger congestion.

Meanwhile, he said KTMB will increase the number of trains and frequency of trips ahead of Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, as it had done for Chinese New Year.

He said KTMB will continue its efforts to ensure their trains can be improved.

“The transport ministry has been requesting for allocations to add trains. We also have a programme to refurbish old trains that may not be able to be used at the moment due to maintenance issues.

“We will try to revive them so that the number of trains can be increased even more. If there are more train sets, the frequency of trips will be increased,” he said.
