In a podcast session hosted by former law minister Zaid Ibrahim, Shahbudin said the government should bear in mind the reality that it will have to face the people again in less than four years at the general election.
“I have heard that changes will take time because there are many things that need to be done.
“Regardless, every five years, the government will have to face the people. Should it fail to fulfil the promises made, its support will wane,” Shahbudin said.
On Sep 13, CNA reported that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had promised to reform the country’s economy and governance, but he emphasised that it “will take time”.
Anwar attributed this to systemic corruption and public cynicism towards political leaders in previous administrations, who were seen as enriching themselves and leading lavish lifestyles.
Echoing Shahbudin’s argument, Zaid said many factors contribute to the rising cost of living, involving external factors like ongoing wars, global market fluctuations and trade policies.
“The people understand that some factors are unavoidable, but we just want to know the steps taken by the government to address the situation,” Zaid said.
He warned that if the government fails to respond to people’s concerns and economic woes persist, the country could end up like Sri Lanka, which suffered economic collapse in early 2022.
This prompted mass street demonstrations and hyperinflation, coupled with shortages in necessities like fuel and some basic foodstuffs.
Meanwhile, Zaid said people are getting frustrated with politicians on both sides.
“Malaysian politicians don’t walk the talk, in government or in the opposition… Leaders made lofty promises, which they have yet to fulfil after coming to power,” Zaid said.
He added that the opposition has also been passive.
“They do not have the will to put forward alternative policies to be debated, despite promising to be an effective opposition force”.
Shahbudin said the opposition should have capitalised on the swaying of Malay votes towards them by becoming more effective.
