The incident, which was caught on video, went viral on social media, with Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri yesterday stating that his department had recorded the driver’s statement.
Nga, who is DAP vice-chairman, said he is prepared to pay any compound fine imposed on his driver for the offence.
“The incident occurred while I was en route to attend an official programme in Ipoh (last Saturday),” said Nga in a Facebook post.
“My driver became aware that a private ambulance was tailing my vehicle to an accident site. To prioritise rescue efforts, my driver gave way to the ambulance.
“Since the road was congested, my driver had to tailgate the ambulance while looking for space to continue the journey to Ipoh,” he said, adding that he “never intended to break the law”.
The incident occurred when the ambulance was en route to an accident site at KM 305 of the North-South Expressway, between Simpang Pulai and Tapah.
Yusri yesterday said the case was being investigated under Rule 9 (2) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, which stipulates that drivers must give way to emergency vehicles that had their sirens on.
