PETALING JAYA:
Former national footballer Khalid Ali died this evening after a battle with cancer. He was 66.

The Football Association of Malaysia announced Khalid’s death in a Facebook post today and said he had fought lung cancer for nearly a year.

Khalid represented the national team from 1977 to 1985, helping the Harimau Malaya squad qualify for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, Russia.

He played as a right back and defensive midfielder. He had two stints with the Selangor team, playing for them from 1976 to 1980, and then 1983 to 1985. In between that, he played for the Kuala Lumpur team.

Khalid was diagnosed with stage-4 lung cancer around April last year.

He was reportedly being treated at a medical centre in the Klang Valley before he breathed his last.
