Klang pothole fixer not out to score political points

‘Sheikh’ says he does it for public safety but does not want anyone taking credit for his work.

PETALING JAYA:
A man who painted “duit saya”, or “my money”, over a recently filled pothole on Jalan Hulubalang, Taman Sentosa, in Klang, said he filled in the cavity out of concern for public safety and did not intend to make it a political issue.

The man, who only wanted to be known as Sheikh, also said he had nothing against Sentosa assemblyman RG Gunaraj.

“I always do charitable things and this is one of them, as it involves people’s lives.

“During the rainy weather, we can’t see how deep the pothole is and that is why I chose to fill it in, costing me RM1,500,” he told FMT.

He added that he had been in touch with Gunaraj to clarify why he filled in the pothole.

“I didn’t expect the matter to go viral. I said all those things in the video so that others would not claim my good deeds,” he said.

In response, Gunaraj said he was aware of Sheikh’s actions and welcomed those with initiative.

“The Klang Municipal Council has been repairing the roads but heavy vehicles and rainy weather have caused more potholes,” he told FMT.

Gunaraj said people would blame him and the council and accused them of not doing their job.

He said he would be meeting council president Noraini Roslan to discuss how to expedite road repairs in Klang during the rainy season.

Earlier, a video went viral on social media showing a man painting the words “duit saya”, or “my money”, on a freshly tarred section of a road in Klang.

The video had sparked concerns on whether it was a political attack aimed at the Sentosa assemblyman.
