Daim’s wife, sons summoned to give info on family’s assets, MACC explains

The anti-graft agency says the trio were called in today to help ascertain the value of some of the assets, both locally and abroad, held by companies owned by the family.

Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin’s wife Naimah Khalid and their two sons were earlier called in to the MACC’s headquarters at 10.30am and only left about nine hours later.
PETALING JAYA:
Daim Zainuddin’s wife, Naimah Khalid, and their two sons were summoned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today to provide information on assets belonging to the family, says the anti-graft agency.

MACC said a notice was served on Daim under Section 36(1)(a) of the MACC Act 2009 on June 7, 2023, while his family members were served notices under Sections 36(1)(b) of the same Act.

“They were called in to give their statements to ascertain the value of some of the high-value assets, both domestic and abroad, held under the companies belonging to them in relation to the investigation into the former finance minister,” it said in a statement.

Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act pertains to the agency’s powers to question relatives of a person being investigated in order to identify assets in his or her possession, including the estimated value and location of such assets.

The MACC reiterated that its investigation into Daim began in February 2023 based on information from the Pandora Papers, which linked several prominent Malaysians to offshore tax havens.

Earlier, the lawyer representing the trio, Rajesh Nagarajan, described the MACC’s questioning of his clients as a “giant fishing expedition”.

Naimah and her two sons were called in for questioning at 10.30am and exited the MACC’s headquarters here nine hours later.

Speaking to reporters after the trio left, Rajesh claimed that the anti-graft agency did not inform his clients as to why they were questioned.

“They went on a fishing journey to try and find information to charge Daim.

“You’re not even disclosing what’s the offence. This is against natural justice.”

Meanwhile, another lawyer representing the trio, Sachpreetraj Singh, said the MACC officers told his clients that they were being questioned to find out if they committed any offence.

He claimed that the MACC officers’ exact words were “we are investigating to find out what offence was committed.”
