The decision was reached at the federal-state joint committee meeting chaired by deputy premier Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also the Sarawak minister for infrastructure and port development, and transport minister Loke Siew Fook here today.
A joint statement issued after the meeting said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed in February to finalise the handover.
The MoU would enable Sarawak to establish a Bintulu port authority under the Port Authority Ordinance 1961, while ensuring that port operations will not be affected during the transition period.
“The transport ministry will table a bill to repeal the Bintulu Port Authority Act 1981 in the next parliamentary session,” it said.
