Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department (CCID) director Ramli Yoosuf said the company was suspected to have failed to deposit the RM9.6 million zakat collection which it collected between March and September last year.
“It is disappointing that zakat collections were embezzled by certain individuals entrusted with collecting them. This shouldn’t have happened as paying zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam,” he said at a press conference.
He said the case in Perak is among four cases of breach of trust involving zakat collections that his department is currently probing.
Two cases were reported in Selangor and another in Terengganu. The accumulated losses totalled RM9.71 million, including the case in Perak.
“The department has issued a stern warning to these offenders that strict action will be taken according to the law to ensure that this sort of crime is not repeated,” said Ramli.
