PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the Islamic party hopes that the festivities would be celebrated in a “safe and harmonious environment” and would pave the way for “better and meaningful days ahead”.
“The harmonious and festive celebration of various religious or cultural events in this country is a manifestation of our culture of gentleness, tolerance and mutual respect that has long been firmly established in our society,” he said in a statement.
He said, therefore, the multi-ethnic and multiracial society must be defended from “any inclinations that may weaken the practice of such qualities”.
Takiyuddin also believed that the existing diversity in the country must be nurtured as it was a treasure of our society and adds value to the quality of Malaysians’ togetherness.
“As an Islamic party, PAS celebrates and is always open to such diversity.
“Not only as a special feature of our society but also as the core of Islamic teachings which embraces such bonds of our great human family, inclusive of all races, cultures and religions, legally and honourably,” he said.
PAS received brickbats in 2018 when a party leader called for Muslims to stay away from Christmas celebrations and not to wish Christians for the occasion.
Then PAS Youth chief Khalil Hadi said Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus, the central figure in Christianity, and who is also revered by Muslims, was contrary to Islamic teachings.
Khalil, who is the son of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, said this was because Christians believe Jesus was the son of God and therefore, it amounted to shirk, or associating others to God.
He said while it was allowed for Muslims to wish a Christian neighbour out of respect, they should not liberally take part in such greetings, including on social media.
In response, Penang mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor said while Muslims should not celebrate non-Muslims’ religious festivities, there is nothing wrong with wishing them.
