CHERAS:
The number of reported sexual harassment cases has dropped after the introduction of the women-only coaches at the Kajang MRT Line, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

“There were eight reports of sexual harassment on the Kajang MRT Line in the first quarter of this year. They increased to 11 in the second quarter and dropped to eight in the third quarter.

“After the implementation of the women-only coaches in September, we are pleased to announce that in the fourth quarter, the total number of sexual harassment reports until November was only three, indicating a decreasing trend,” Loke said when officially launching the women’s coach programme for the Kajang MRT Line.

He said these special coaches have been in use for three months and was confident it could become a permanent feature of the MRT service with it being expanded to other MRT lines in the future.

Loke said the initiative had been well received by female passengers, who make up 62% of the My50 travel pass holders.

Free travel for people with disabilities on Prasarana facilities

Loke also announced that the government will provide free travel for people with disabilities using all modes of transportation provided by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd in the Klang Valley.

He said this programme will commence from Feb 1, 2024. Currently, Prasarana is finalising the system.

“This is an important initiative despite its financial implications on Prasarana, as it will reduce its profits.

“However, I have requested the Prasarana chairman to convince the board of directors that this is an important corporate social responsibility (CSR) project, in line with the aspirations of the Madani government, specifically the principle of compassion for the disabled community,” Loke said.

KL monorail train tyre incident

On the incident where a KL monorail train tyre caught fire and fell onto the road near the Jalan Tun Razak station in Sentul on Tuesday, Loke said Prasarana was investigating how this happened and will submit a report to the ministry.

He said nobody was injured in the incident.
