No Malaysians affected in China quake

PUTRAJAYA:
No Malaysians have been reported to be affected by the earthquake that struck China’s northwest Gansu and Qinghai provinces.

Wisma Putra said it would continue to closely monitor developments through the consulate-general in Xi’an.

In a statement, it said: “Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the people and government of the People’s Republic of China, as well as to the victims and families affected by the earthquake.”

The quake, with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale, hit last night at 11.59pm, impacting the Gansu and Qinghai provinces.

Local authorities said there had been approximately 105 deaths and 397 injured in Gansu, with 11 people reported killed in Qinghai.

The statement further noted that more than 4,700 houses had been damaged, and some villages were experiencing disruptions to power, water supplies, transport and communications.

Malaysians in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow updates and advice from local authorities.
