Underwater pipe bursts, parts of Penang hit

A 1.35m thick water pipe has burst at the bottom of Sungai Perai affecting supply to many areas, according to the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP).

In a statement, the state water operator said it is trying to identify the cause of the rupture.

It added that this would affect the water supply to areas in Seberang Perai Utara, such as Ampang Jajar, Butterworth and Sungai Dua, Penang island’s entire southwest district and parts of its northeast district.

“Consumers’ cooperation in reducing water use is greatly appreciated.

“PBAPP will provide status updates from time to time. We regret the inconvenience this has caused,” it said.

When contacted by FMT, PBAPP’s corporate communications department said it is still trying to determine the number of accounts that would be affected by the pipe rupture.
