Murder charge for senior cop in hit-and-run case

PETALING JAYA:
A senior police officer will be charged for murder tomorrow over a hit-and-run accident that caused the death of a schoolboy in Ipoh last week.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers said today that there was enough evidence to tentatively charge the suspect under the Penal Code section for murder, based on the investigation carried out and the statements recorded.

The 44-year-old suspect, who holds the rank of deputy superintendent, will be tentatively charged at the magistrates’ court. The court will set a date for the transfer of the case to the High Court in Ipoh for trial.

The AGC’s statement comes a day after Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri said police would expedite their investigation to facilitate a prosecution.

The suspect was arrested on Friday, hours after a hit-and-run accident which killed 17-year-old Zaharif Affendi Zamrie.

It was previously reported that a car had rammed into Zaharif’s motorcycle after a 1km chase, causing him to fall off and be dragged for nearly five metres.

The schoolboy, an SPM student at SMK Jati, died of injuries to the chest and abdomen while the 44-year-old car driver was not hurt.

Earlier today, Zaharif’s father, Zamrie Zainal Abidin, 55, said the family has appointed a legal firm “to make sure the investigation is transparent and there are no cover-ups”.

Zaharif’s brother, Zarul Fitri, 29, and sister, Nur Zawanie, 28, appealed to witnesses and those with video recordings of the incident to assist in the investigation.
