IPOH:
The family of the teenager killed after being hit by a car near SMK Jati in Meru here on Friday has appointed a lawyer to seek justice over his death.

The student’s father, Zamrie Zainal Abidin, 55, said they have appointed the law firm of Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak to advise them.

“I want justice for my son and make sure the investigation is transparent and there are no cover-ups, that’s all,” he said when met at his home today.

Zamrie said the suspect should be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code if there was intention to cause a collision.

“If he claims it was an accident, then my son shouldn’t have sustained severe injuries,” he said.

Zaharif Affendi Zamrie, 17, who was riding his motorcycle from school, was killed after he was hit by a car driven by the 44-year-old suspect, a senior police officer at the Kedah police headquarters, who escaped unhurt.

Lawyer Wan Azmir Wan Majid said his firm was appointed by the family to ascertain if civil action could be taken against the suspect and other parties, including the government and the police force.

“We are collecting evidence and reviewing the videos submitted to us, as well as contacting witnesses,” he said.

Asked about the family’s request for the investigating officer (IO) to be replaced, Wan Azmir said it was to ensure a fair investigation because it was understood that the IO and the suspect knew each other.

Zaharif’s brother, Zarul Fitri, 29, and sister, Nur Zawanie, 28, appealed to witnesses and those with video recordings of the incident to assist in the investigation.

The police have also called on those with evidence, such as dashcam recordings or closed-circuit television footage, to come forward.
