PETALING JAYA:
The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) has begun investigating allegations on social media about sales of poor-quality local white rice.

Fama chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli said they took such allegations seriously.

He told Bernama that previous claims of repackaged rice, including a claim of “plastic rice”, had been proven to be untrue.

“I will instruct Fama to conduct an in-depth investigation regarding the issue of low-quality rice being sold.

“From experience, such allegations can be genuine, so a specific in-depth field investigation will be carried out,” he said after attending an integrated food security programme in Ipoh today.

A Facebook user had alleged in a post on Nov 15 that rice distributed by Fama was not the same as before because it now easily became stale. The person said the rice was also not fluffy and looked dull.

Aminuddin said that Fama had so far been given adequate supplies and according to feedback, the supply of local white rice was sufficient for local needs.

“Fama has not received any report or complaint about the quality of rice so far, because the rice has an expiry date of six months. So, we welcome any feedback from consumers,” he said.
