PETALING JAYA:
Many Umno leaders and members would love to work with PAS despite the failure of their past Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance, claims a leader of the Islamic party.

Wanita PAS chief Nuridah Salleh added that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s description of PAS being “divorce crazy” was merely the Umno president’s personal opinion and did not reflect the opinion of Umno members as a whole.

“The Umno president is just speaking for himself. The reality is that many Umno leaders and members like working and being on good terms with PAS,” she told FMT.

Zahid had described PAS as “divorce crazy” for wanting to work with Umno again, telling the Islamic party to just forget this dream of theirs.

The Umno president was responding to PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, who said PAS would not rule out being allies with Umno again despite the “bitterness” of their past.

Umno and PAS forged the MN alliance in September 2019, with the two largest Malay-Muslim parties coming together after decades of conflict.

They went on to be key partners in the federal government after the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration collapsed, backing Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister, followed by Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

However, their relationship soured during their time together in Putrajaya, largely due to Umno’s refusal to include Bersatu under MN while PAS went on to become a component of Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Separately, PAS election director Sanusi Nor was reported to have said that MN could be revived if Zahid was no longer the Umno president, according to Utusan Malaysia.

The Kedah menteri besar said Umno’s current leadership does not understand the meaning and concept of uniting the ummah, adding that such unity was necessary for the country.
