There are 49 polling centres in four districts – Kemasik, Kijal, Chukai and Air Putih – in the constituency and they are scheduled to close at 6pm, Bernama reported.

EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh was previously reported to have said that he expected a turnout of up to 70% for the by-election if the weather holds up. However, the meteorological department had forecast rain from morning until evening.

There are a total of 141,043 eligible voters in the constituency, including 387 policemen, six military personnel and three of their spouses as well as 12 overseas voters.

The Barisan Nasional candidate, retired general Raja Affandi Raja Noor, is in a straight fight with Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who is contesting under the PAS ticket.

The by-election was called following an election court decision on Sept 26 which annulled the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the 15th general election (GE15) last year over bribery claims.

Che Alias won the Kemaman seat with a majority of 27,179 votes over his closest rival, Terengganu Umno chairman and former menteri besar Ahmad Said. The other two candidates in the four-cornered contest were Hasuni Sudin of Pakatan Harapan and Rosli Ab Ghani of Pejuang.

In GE15, PAS won all eight parliamentary seats in Terengganu.
