Sessions court judge Faiz Dziyauddin, however, ordered the 47-year-old to be sent to Hospital Bahagia, Ulu Kinta, Perak, for treatment.
In his judgement, Faiz said Yasin was not mentally sound when he was arrested on March 24, despite being aware of his actions.
“The manic symptoms suffered by the accused had eroded his cognitive abilities to a point he was unable to differentiate between right and wrong and unlawful or otherwise.
“The court hereby rules that the accused be placed under safe custody at Hospital Bahagia, Ulu Kinta, Perak, at the pleasure of the Sultan of Selangor,” Faiz said.
Yasin, who composed and sang the hit song “Mimpi Laila” was charged in March last year with self-administering “11-nor-delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid”, a primary active component of cannabis, at a police station in Petaling Jaya.
The nasyid singer was also charged with possessing 193.7g of cannabis and cultivating 17 cannabis plants at his home in Kota Damansara.
Last year, he was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on a cannabis trafficking charge.
