“I wanted to resign. But my wife said stay another term.
“The real power isn’t the annual general assembly, it’s my wife.
“She told me not to disappoint the members, who need me,” he said at the party’s general assembly here today.
“So, I will stay for one more term.”
Muhyiddin’s announcement was met with cheers from the leaders and delegates.
He also called on members to pledge their allegiance and remain loyal to the party.
Muhyiddin also urged them to recruit more people to achieve a target of one million members by next year.
“We currently have 600,000 members, so we should work harder to reach the one million target by next year.
“I also want to see 12,000 branches by next year. We currently have 7,000,” he said.
This, Muhyiddin said, would strengthen the party.
Meanwhile, at a press conference later, he denied that his announcement yesterday was a gimmick.
“It is all in writing (my speech), so how can that be a gimmick?”
Earlier today, the Bersatu general assembly unanimously rejected Muhyiddin’s decision to not defend his position as president in the party elections scheduled for next year.
The rejection was voiced by 20 speakers taking part in this year’s annual general assembly.
Yesterday, Bersatu’s Supreme Council also reached a similar decision at an emergency meeting chaired by deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
