PETALING JAYA:
A 38-year-old man died at the Pengkalan Chepa police headquarters lockup in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, on Wednesday.

Bukit Aman’s integrity and compliance director Azri Ahmad said the detainee had been held in the lockup temporarily after being sentenced by the Pengkalan Chepa magistrates’ court to two years imprisonment for possession of drugs.

“On Nov 22, at 7.42pm, the detainee complained of feeling ill, and the hospital was immediately contacted for treatment,” Azri said in a statement today.

He said an assistant medical officer from a clinic arrived and examined the detainee, and subsequently confirmed his death.

An autopsy was carried out at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Bharu yesterday, which confirmed no criminal elements involved in the man’s death.

Azri said a Covid-19 test also showed a negative result.

“The cause of death has yet to be confirmed and the case has been classified as pending investigations while we await the lab results,” he said.

He said Bukit Aman’s death in custody investigation unit will carry out an investigation before handing the final report to the coroner.
