PETALING JAYA:
Agus Yusoff has stepped down as director-general of the controversial department for community communications or J-Kom, according to a source.

“Yes (he has resigned), effective yesterday,” the source who is familiar with the matter told FMT.

Earlier today, news portal Suara.TV quoted a source as saying that Agus had tendered his resignation effective yesterday.

However, when contacted, Agus remained tight-lipped on the matter.

“I don’t want to say anything about that (resignation). I am on holiday right now. Please relax first,” he said.

“(All this speculation) is too premature. The prime minister is not even around.”

J-Kom, originally known as the special affairs department or Jasa, was rebranded as the department for community communications in 2020.

Parked under the prime minister’s department, it is meant to be the communications arm of the government, tasked with conveying Putrajaya’s messages to the people.

However, the unit has been mired in controversy since 2021, with Pakatan Harapan threatening to vote against the budget in which it was first proposed.

Skudai assemblyman Marina Ibrahim previously urged Agus to resign following Perikatan Nasional’s gains at the six state elections earlier this year.

Kuala Krai MP Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman also called for J-Kom to be abolished, citing its failure to explain several issues including the rise in cost of goods.
