BN man files appeal to overturn Mas Ermieyati’s win in Masjid Tanah

Barisan Nasional’s Abdul Hakim Abdul Wahid has filed an appeal with the Federal Court to overturn an election court ruling on his challenge to Perikatan Nasional’s Mas Ermieyati Samsudin’s victory in the Masjid Tanah parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15) last year.

Lawyer Norhazira Abu Haiyan, representing Hakim, said the notice of appeal was filed on Nov 11.

“We will file the memorandum of appeal once the written grounds of the election judge are made available to us,” she said of her client, who lost to the PN candidate.

On Oct 27, election court judge Abu Bakar Katar dismissed Hakim’s petition, citing his failure to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that money was paid during the campaign period to induce voters to vote for Mas Ermieyati.

The court also awarded her costs of RM50,000.

Mas Ermieyati, the former deputy law minister in the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration, defeated Hakim with a majority of 4,411 votes.

Muda’s Mutalib Uthman and Pejuang’s Handrawirawan Abu Bakar were the other candidates in Masjid Tanah.

Mas Ermieyati is currently the chairman of the public accounts committee (PAC).
