PETALING JAYA:
Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman says the public has a right to know why their elected representatives are absent from parliamentary sittings.

Syed Saddiq, who is also the Muar MP, said this is because the salaries and allowances of MPs are paid by the public.

“The people pay my salary and the salaries of other MPs to address the concerns of the public in Parliament, not to skip sessions and receive a ‘free’ salary.

“The public has the right to understand why some MPs have a 100% attendance record, while others are absent without explanation,” he told FMT.

Syed Saddiq’s remarks were in response to a proposal by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul to publicly display the names of MPs who skip parliamentary sittings on the Dewan Rakyat website for the benefit of their constituents.

Johari said he would discuss the suggestion with a parliamentary committee that includes MPs from both the government and opposition blocs.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also said he would leave the decision to Johari.

Earlier today, FMT reported that a government backbencher criticised the proposal, saying it is not the reform Parliament needs.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim said what the Dewan Rakyat needs are more significant reforms, including restoring the Parliamentary Services Act.
