PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu has issued Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid a show cause letter after he decided to back Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

In a statement, party secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said Bersatu’s top leadership discussed Iskandar Dzulkarnain’s position yesterday.

“The disciplinary board has issued him a show cause letter before any action is taken according to the party’s constitution,” he said.

On Oct 12, Iskandar Dzulkarnain announced that he would support Anwar’s unity government after considering the urgent need to address the rising cost of living in his constituency.

However, the MP said he remained loyal to his party and would not leave or betray Bersatu under any circumstances.

His announcement was followed by claims from Hamzah that Iskandar Dzulkarnain was pressured by the government into supporting Anwar’s leadership.

Hamzah, who is also the opposition leader, alleged that Iskandar Dzulkarnain was brought to meet a top officer of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and threatened with corruption charges if he refused to pledge his support for the government.

However, on Oct 18, Anwar denied the “serious allegation” and asked Hamzah to lodge a report against him with evidence.

“If there is evidence, he has to provide it, but what else does he want to say? All I know is that I haven’t met, contacted or sent a representative to (Iskandar Dzulkarnain). I don’t know who threatened him,” Anwar said.

Subsequently, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki also denied the allegation, saying the commission was not involved in any such meeting.
