PSM activist hurt after allegedly shoved by lands and mines officer

Department director Fariz Hanip says the activist was blocking the agency’s vehicles from entering a vegetable farm during an eviction exercise.

Chong Yee Shan was said to have suffered injuries to her nose and mouth, as well as wounds on her legs and hands.
PETALING JAYA:
A Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) activist was injured after being shoved by a Perak land and mines (PTG) officer during an eviction exercise at the Kanthan vegetable farm in Tambun, Perak, today.

PSM central committee member R Karthiges said Chong Yee Shan suffered injuries to her nose and mouth, as well as wounds on her legs and hands.

Karthiges said the incident happened when Chong tried to stop the officers, who had gone to the site to evict the farmers with bulldozers and excavators.

“When we tried to stop them and said not to enter, they pushed through and caused Chong to get injured,” he told FMT.

Karthiges said the situation was under control with the police and relevant parties present, and Chong was sent to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Perak PTG director Fariz Hanip told FMT the department was looking into the incident.

From the information he received, he said, Chong was preventing the department’s vehicles from entering the area, which hindered the officers from carrying out their duties.

“I will get the actual picture, but in reality, the officer in question did not intentionally cause any injuries because she (Chong) was blocking vehicles from entering the area,” Fariz said.

Land dispute

Karthiges said the farmers had been given a notice on Oct 13, stating that their farms were situated on land owned by the Perak Development Corporation, and instructing them to vacate the land within a week.

“We received the notice on Friday, but a few days after the notice, they arrived (to evict the farmers),” he said.

Fariz said the farmers had been allocated another piece of farming land not far from the original location a year ago, and their original site was to be developed.

“It was not an enforcement action that did not provide alternatives. There is an option with an opportunity to continue their activities in an area not far from that location,” he said.
