Nearly 4,000 websites blocked by govt since January

Most of these sites were blocked for phishing scams, pornography, online gambling and copyright breaches, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

The authorities blocked websites and also took down social media postings on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube.

Almost 4,000 websites have been blocked by government agencies since January, says communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil.

In a Dewan Rakyat reply, Fahmi said a total of 3,997 websites were blocked up to Aug 31, with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission taking responsibility for most of them.

The majority of these sites were blocked for phishing scams (1,247), pornography (1,022), online gambling (973) and copyright breaches (453).

Several sites were also blocked by the police, Securities Commission, and the ministries of health, home affairs, local government development, as well as domestic trade and cost of living.

On social media, MCMC took down 11,949 various postings on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube.

The postings involved online gambling (7,026), scams (1,842), harassment or bullying (1,263), and false content (722).

“The removal or deletion of social media content is subject to the service terms and conditions set by the relevant social media platforms,” said the minister in reply to a question from Wan Saiful Wan Jan (PN-Tasek Gelugor).
