In a statement, PMO said it takes a serious view of people who misuse the prime minister’s name without permission.
It also said such actions were “highly irresponsible” and could have a negative impact on the credibility of Anwar and his administration.
“Therefore, the Prime Minister’s Office advises the public not to be confused by unofficial statements issued by any party,” it said.
The statement came after a news portal reported that a businessman said to be close to Anwar planned to set up a new Indian-majority political party.
In a Malaysiakini report, P Thiagarajan reportedly said a final decision on the matter would only be announced after he meets with the prime minister.
Malaysiakini said Thiagarajan was speaking after last Saturday’s “Indian Community Towards a Brighter Future” event, which was aimed at gathering input from Indian leaders and NGOs about forming a new party.
“I have told Anwar about this. He said, ‘Go ahead’.
“Whatever feedback from today, I will inform him (Anwar) soon,” he was quoted as saying.
“The final decision is in his hands. Don’t worry, we hope for the best from our prime minister.”
