Bersatu leader calls for special sitting on Zahid’s DNAA

The party's Youth chief, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, says an explanation on the deputy prime minister’s conditional discharge is important as the AG's credibility is being questioned.

PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has called for a special sitting to be held at the Dewan Rakyat, so that the attorney-general (AG) can explain deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s conditional discharge over corruption charges.

The Machang MP proposed for the one-day sitting to be held on Sept 11.

In a Facebook post, Wan Fayhsal said he submitted an emergency motion to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul yesterday.

“This involves the image and credibility of the attorney-general which is being questioned.”

“A swift and comprehensive explanation from the attorney-general will quell any concerns raised by the public.”

He added that all the MPs had a right to know the details and basis of the decision made by the AG to withdraw all of Zahid’s corruption charges, considering the court has already proven a prima facie case against him.

Wan Fayhsal is not the first to urge for some parliamentary oversight on the case, as yesterday, PKR Youth called for a special session of the Dewan Rakyat to discuss Zahid’s discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA).

On Monday, Zahid was granted the DNAA on all 47 charges involving corruption, criminal breach of trust and money laundering.

He had been accused of embezzling millions of ringgit from his foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi, and accepting bribes for various projects during his tenure as the home minister between 2013 and 2018.

The decision, however, drew brickbats, with activists, party leaders from the unity government as well as the opposition demanding an explanation from the AG.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) defended its highly criticised decision, saying the reasons presented before the High Court were deemed “cogent” and accepted by Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah.
