KUALA LUMPUR:
A political watchdog has classified Arau MP Shahidan Kassim from Perikatan Nasional (PN) as the most controversial lawmaker in Parliament.

Based on an analysis of the Hansard for the 15th session of the Dewan Rakyat from December 2022 to June this year, MyMP gave him the highest score for two keywords – “ketawa” and “riuh” (“laughter” and “noise”).

“A landslide victory for Arau MP Shahidan Kassim, who was responsible for the most ‘parlimen riuh’ and ‘parlimen ketawa’ instances,” MyMP founder Lau Chak Onn said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Lau said the only MP whose score outdid Shahidan was Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, from Pakatan Harapan, during the 14th session of the Dewan Rakyat from 2018 to 2022.

For the current session, Shahidan held the highest score with 72 counts for the “parlimen riuh” category, and 75 counts for the “parlimen ketawa” category.

The others in the “top standings” are Rayer, Pendang MP Awang Hashim, and Hulu Langat MP Sany Hamzan.

Although both Shahidan and Rayer have been classified as the most controversial MPs for this term and the previous one, Lau said both are regarded as “effective” lawmakers for their involvement in the Dewan Rakyat in terms of attendance and the number of questions asked.

Lau said the group’s objective was to encourage the rakyat to monitor their MPs’ performance in an “entertaining manner”.
