This comes after a press conference in which, Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the party felt that “the biggest red line (was) crossed” after Zahid’s discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) in his Yayasan Akalbudi case.
“There has been no decision to leave yet. We are evaluating the situation,” Amir told FMT later.
He was speaking after the party launched its #DakwaZahid campaign, in which Muda is pushing for Zahid, who is also the Umno president, to be charged again.
It also wants the attorney-general (AG) to explain the decision to request for the DNAA, and the separation of the public prosecutor’s role from the AG.
“If there is no response from the government on our three demands, we might have to consider (leaving the government).”
Amir said that until the separation of the public prosecutor’s role from the AG is carried out, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) must refrain from withdrawing charges in high-profile cases.
He said this includes the criminal trial involving Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
The former youth and sports minister is accused of abetting in criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of assets and money laundering in relation to RM1.2 million in funds linked to Bersatu Youth, also known as Armada.
The Muar MP is awaiting a court ruling after the case was closed on April 11.
Muda’s #DakwaZahid campaign comes after the High Court’s decision to grant Zahid the DNAA, which was strongly criticised by various parties, including civil society groups and activists.
This follows the prosecution’s decision to apply for a discharge on Zahid’s charges. The application was made after representations to the AGC by Zahid’s lawyers.
Zahid was accused of embezzling millions of ringgit from his charitable foundation Yayasan Akalbudi and accepting bribes for various projects during his tenure as the home minister between 2013 and 2018.
The DNAA allows the prosecution to resume the case or bring a case against Zahid at any time in the future, based on similar facts and evidence.
