7 held over footbrawl outside Penang’s City Stadium

Police say supporters from Penang and Kedah pelted each other with stones and traffic cones.

Police say two of the suspects in the brawl sustained head injuries, presumably from being struck by stones.
GEORGE TOWN:
Police arrested seven people involved in a brawl near City Stadium here last night after the Malaysia Super League football match between Kedah and Penang, which Kedah won 2-1.

The incident took place at 11.20pm when fans were leaving after the match, with supporters from both sides taunting one another at a petrol station next to the stadium before it escalated into an altercation.

Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said those involved threw stones and traffic cones at each other, with one shattering the glass of a bus parked nearby.

“Two of the suspects sustained head injuries, presumably from being struck by the stones,” he said in a statement.

Soffian said the seven arrested were aged between 18 and 38 and have been remanded for two days for an investigation into rioting and causing damage to property.

The suspects are from Penang, Kedah and Sarawak.
