In a statement, Muda said its election post-mortem will be on Aug 26.

“We held a central executive committee meeting yesterday, attended by national and state leaders.

“The main focus of the meeting was our performance in the state elections and the key vacancies,” the party said, adding that information chief Luqman Long had stepped down and his replacement will be announced soon.

The party said it had set the agenda for its leadership elections to be brought forward but did not specify a date.

The purpose of the elections is to give the party “a new face” and rebuild, it added.

Last Sunday, a Muda member urged the party to conduct leadership elections in the wake of its defeat in all 19 seats, with all its candidates having lost their deposits.

Danial Jafri was reported to have said the call for party elections is consistent with the demands of the grassroots to tackle internal matters and enhance party structure.

He also called for the central executive committee to step down to take responsibility for the electoral defeats.
