Voter turnout lower compared with GE15

State polls get off to a slow start, but the Election Commission is hoping for a 85% voter turnout, compared with 74.4% in GE15.

Election Commission officers expect voting to gain momentum in the afternoon.
PETALING JAYA:
The overall voter turnout across the six states holding elections today seems to be lower compared with that of the 15th general election (GE15) last November.

A look at the number of people who went to polling stations for the Subang Jaya and Batu Tiga seats in Selangor showed there was a notably lower turnout this morning.

In Batu Tiga, an Election Commission officer, who declined to be named, noted that only 3,670 people had turned up to vote as of 11am, the majority of whom were youths.

In Subang Jaya, where there was a noticeable absence of younger voters, EC officers also said the turnout for GE15 at around the time was significantly higher.

The returning officers on duty were also anticipating a decline in the overall number of voters.

Meanwhile, in Penang’s Bayan Lepas constituency, EC officers also observed a lower voter turnout compared with GE15.

As at 10.30am, only 20% of the eligible voters had cast their votes at the polling stations. That is in sharp contrast to the same time at GE15, when 45% of the voters had voted.

An officer attributed the decline to voters staying outside Penang choosing not to return.

In Perai, there was a lack of young voters in the morning. “Many are probably not given the morning off, so we expect them to come in the afternoon,” an EC officer said.

In Kedah, the morning’s estimated voter turnout in Pedu stood at a mere 200 as of 10.30am.

Similarly, in Labu, Negeri Sembilan, the count had not surpassed 800 at about the same time.

The EC had predicted an 85% voter turnout today, saying it will surpass the 74.4% recorded in GE15.
