Muhyiddin sues Anwar over Felda settlers’ debt allegations

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin is seeking RM400 million in damages over ‘lies meant to discredit him and his party' ahead of the state polls.

PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin (left) said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim showed no remorse over his comments about the Felda settlers’ debt waiver.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has filed a defamation suit against Anwar Ibrahim over the prime minister’s claim that the former PN-led government did not write off RM8.3 billion in Felda settlers’ debt as promised.

In his statement of claim filed at the High Court yesterday, Muhyiddin claimed that Anwar’s remarks imply that he “lied” about the Felda settlers’ debt waiver.

He also said Anwar did not show “any remorse and continued to rally support for his false and malicious accusations by repeating the statements”.

“Anwar knew that the publication of the statements would stifle and discredit (Bersatu) to his benefit in view of the state elections on Aug 12,” Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president, said in his statement of claim.

He is seeking RM400 million in total for exemplary and aggravated damages, as well as an unspecified sum in general damages.

He also wants Anwar to remove the statements from his social media pages.

Previously, Muhyiddin’s lawyers issued letters of demand to Anwar, insisting that he retract his comments.

However, Anwar responded by accusing Muhyiddin of “twisting” his remarks and demanded that Muhyiddin apologise for taking them out of context.

Anwar’s lawyers also told Muhyiddin to retract his letter of demand, failing which they said the prime minister would commence legal action.

Anwar had previously alleged that the PN government had failed to provide any allocation in the 2021 and 2022 national budgets to resolve the Felda debt issue.

He said it was only in this year’s Madani budget that RM990 million had been set aside as an initial tranche towards resolving the debt.
