PETALING JAYA:
Malaysians can expect cheaper broadband services after September, says the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

MCMC said access agreements with retail broadband service providers are still being finalised, and prices can only be reviewed after that.

It said most service providers have either published or are in the process of publishing a reference access offer (RAO), which is necessary to begin negotiations of access agreements.

The negotiations are expected to conclude by the end of September, it said.

“As such, price reduction of broadband services can be expected to take place thereafter,” it said in a statement.

MCMC was responding to a report by technology news portal SoyaCincau, questioning the lack of price revisions for broadband services four months after the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing went into effect on March 1.

Aside from standardising broadband access prices, the government has launched “Pakej Perpaduan”, an affordable internet package targeted at youths, those in the B40 group, as well as residents living in People’s Housing Projects and public housing projects, among others.
