“We discussed extensively on the position and future of the Malays without specifically touching on the Malay Proclamation,” Muhyiddin said in a Facebook post.
He said, essentially, both of them agreed to strengthen Malay unity and enhance support for Perikatan Nasional (PN), particularly in facing the upcoming six state elections.
Earlier, Malay Proclamation secretariat chairman Khairuddin Abu Hassan revealed that the two former prime ministers held a two-hour meeting last night.
The meeting is believed to be the first the two have had since the Sheraton Move in February 2020 which ultimately led to the collapse of the former Pakatan Harapan government led by Mahathir. Muhyiddin then replaced him as prime minister.
Khairuddin, however, did not go into detail about what Mahathir and Muhyiddin discussed.
Khairuddin said the Malay Proclamation which was started by Mahathir seeks to unite Malays regardless of their political ideologies.
Several leaders from Bersatu and PAS, including its president Abdul Hadi Awang have signed the Malay Proclamation in their personal capacities.
In a recent interview with FMT, Muhyiddin said the 12 points listed in the Malay Proclamation were the foundation of Bersatu’s struggles.
Mahathir and Muhyiddin are founding members of Bersatu, but the former quit the party in February 2020, after he stepped down as prime minister.
Previously, both Muhyiddin and Mahathir said they were willing to work with each other for the sake of the Malays and Islam.
