PETALING JAYA:
An anti-graft group has called for the government to consider a suggestion to present the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) annual report directly to Parliament.

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) said the suggestion by Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim would allow serious issues of corruption in the country to be addressed in a more urgent manner.

“We have serious problems tackling corruption and both the prime minister and government need timely information to act swiftly.

“The government should consider removing all the bureaucracy and at the same time, make MACC truly independent by amending the MACC Act as part of the overall reform to the commission,” it said in a statement.

On Monday, Hassan, who is a member of the parliamentary select committee on corruption, suggested that MACC’s annual report be presented directly to Parliament for debate.

He said the current practice of presenting the report to the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board first was no longer relevant and must be changed.
