PETALING JAYA:
The communications and digital ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will finally meet officials of instant messaging platform Telegram tomorrow, after reportedly making numerous requests to discuss user safety.

Communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil told reporters about the meeting after attending a cybersecurity event in Kuala Lumpur today.

Last month, Bernama reported Fahmi as saying his ministry had reached out to the company several times since January for a meeting on user security, but the firm had been uncooperative.

He said the ministry received various complaints about the services provided on the platform regarding public safety, including the sale of drugs, scams, and porn.

Personal Data Protection Act to be amended

Fahmi said amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act, to prevent personal data from being stolen and used in fraud, would be carried out in December or March.

He said most fraud incidents occurred after the personal data of the victims were stolen due to carelessness or cybersecurity weakness by those handling personal data.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the bill would be expedited to ensure all legal aspects relating to cybersecurity are covered.
