A-G’s appointment timely, says PAC chief

Mas Ermieyati Samsudin says there should be no issues as long as Wan Suraya Wan Radzi has the necessary background for the post of auditor-general.

Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said Wan Suraya Wan Radzi’s appointment as Auditor-General (A-G) was timely with Parliament set to debate the A-G’s latest report soon.
PETALING JAYA:
Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has welcomed the appointment of Wan Suraya Wan Radzi as the auditor-general.

“I would like to congratulate Wan Suraya on her appointment. It is right on time, especially since we need to debate the Auditor-General’s (A-G) Report in Parliament soon,” she told FMT.

Despite calling for the post to be filled by an individual who did not serve as a former secretary-general of a ministry, Mas Ermieyati said there should be no issues as long Wan Suraya had the necessary background to lead the department. Wan Suraya has served as the secretary-general in two ministries.

“Plus, a woman has been appointed. So, that is good (news),” she added.

Last week, the PAC chief urged Putrajaya to expedite the appointment of the A-G.

In a statement on June 8, Mas Ermieyati told the government to also “avoid” appointing a former ministry secretary-general as A-G, saying that it would be better for the post to be filled by someone with a professional background in finance or auditing.

Earlier, Chief Secretary Zuki Ali announced that Wan Suraya will be the new A-G from tomorrow. The post had been left vacant for over three months after her predecessor Nik Azman Nik Abdul retired on Feb 23.

Wan Suraya is currently the CEO of the Malaysian Institute of Integrity. She previously served as the secretary-general for the national unity ministry from 2020 to 2021 and for the entrepreneur development and cooperatives ministry from 2018 to 2020.
