Drivers can now renew licence for 10 years

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook says the public may start applying for 10-year licences from next Monday.

Driving licences could previously be renewed yearly or for a maximum of five years.
PETALING JAYA:
Driving licences can now be renewed for up to 10 years, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

“Interested parties should make sure that their current driving licence is valid for more than a year,” he said in a statement today.

Driving licences could previously be renewed yearly or for a maximum of five years.

He said the public may start applying for 10-year licences from next Monday at road transport department offices and counters.

An aide to the minister later told FMT that there is no age limit for those who intend to renew their licences, as long as they are fit to drive.

Loke said those who choose to renew their driving licences for 10 years will only be charged for nine years.

He said this is only applicable for Malaysians.

He also said that Malaysians whose driving licences expired when they were unable to return home during the Covid-19 pandemic may renew them without having to resit their driving tests.

However, this is only applicable for those whose licences expired from Jan 1, 2018 onwards, and is only valid until Dec 31 this year.

“Both these initiatives can only be enjoyed by holders of driving licences who are free from any road transport department restrictions, are not blacklisted by the police, and are free from court-imposed driving suspensions,” he said.
