PETALING JAYA:
The Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court has freed Amanah Youth chief Hasbie Muda of a charge over his role in organising a protest gathering held last July.

Lawyer Faiz Fadzil said Hasbie was freed after the court granted him a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA).

Hasbie was charged under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for failing to notify the Dang Wangi police five days before staging a gathering at Masjid Jamek, Kampung Baru, on July 1 last year.

The rally was held to protest against the rising prices of goods.

Faiz said the court decision showed the government was beginning to respect the rights and liberties of the people to assemble and express their views as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

He said it also reflected the efforts of the government to resolve the rising cost of living.
