PETALING JAYA:
The Johor Bahru sessions court sentenced a 19-year-old to seven strokes of the rotan after he was convicted of animal cruelty, a charge to which he pleaded guilty last week.

Judge Che Wan Zaidi Che Wan Ibrahim also ordered that Braden Yap be released on a one-year good behaviour bond of RM10,000, Harian Metro reported.

Yap pleaded guilty to causing excruciating pain to a brown female dog by beating and setting her on fire.

He was charged with committing the offence under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 on March 27 in Taman Impian Emas.

In handing down the sentence, Che Wan said the court viewed Yap’s barbaric act seriously.

“Whatever threat posed by the dog did not merit such cruelty. You should have reported the matter to the authorities for further action,” the judge was quoted as saying.

Wan Zaidi also said that he took into account that Yap was a young offender and that this was his first offence. Yap had also shown remorse and admitted to the crime.

FMT reported last month that a 19-year-old had been caught on CCTV abusing stray dogs on three separate occasions, including setting one of them on fire.

The CCTV footage caught the teenager throwing a vase at the dogs, which were living in a stairwell next to a veterinary clinic in Johor Bahru, on March 8.
