21-year-old woman claims trial to stealing RM8,200 to buy iPhone

KUALA LUMPUR:
A 21-year-old woman has claimed trial in the magistrates’ court here to a charge of stealing money from her aunt last month to buy a phone.

Nur Humaira Shanuk Haziki pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her before magistrate Nadia Othman.

She is accused of stealing a debit card belonging to Nor Farah Hanim Alias and withdrawing RM8,200 without her permission at Dang Wangi on March 23 and 24.

It was claimed that she bought an iPhone 13 Pro with the stolen money.

The charge was framed under Section 4(1)(a) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, which deals with offences that involve fraud or dishonesty, and is punishable under Section 4(3) of the same Act.

If convicted, Nur Humaira faces a maximum jail term of 10 years or a fine not exceeding RM150,000, or both.

An alternative charge of dishonestly misappropriating property was framed under Section 403 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of five years and a fine upon conviction.

Nur Humaira, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a minimum bail amount.

The court allowed bail of RM4,000 with two sureties and ordered her to report to the nearest police station every month.

It also fixed May 18 for next mention.
