Ex-Perlis MB claims trial to 5 counts of money laundering

Azlan Man is accused of receiving RM1.06 million from two tour companies from 2014 to 2017.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Former Perlis menteri besar Azlan Man pleaded not guilty to five charges of money laundering amounting to RM1.06 million in the sessions court here this morning.

Azlan, 64, was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001 with receiving the funds from two tour companies – Sri Kedawang Travel & Tours (W) Sdn Bhd and Aidil Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd.

The money was alleged to have been deposited into his bank accounts between February 2014 and December 2017.

On Monday, Azlan had claimed trial in the Kangar sessions court to five counts of submitting false overseas travel claims amounting to more than RM1.18 million between 2013 and 2017.

Azlan faces up to 15 years of imprisonment and a minimum fine of five times the value of the sum allegedly received, if convicted.

He was granted bail of RM50,000 in one surety.

The court fixed June 9 for next mention.

Judge Azura Alwi presided over the proceedings. DPP Ahmad Akram Gharib appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Burhanudeen Abdul Wahid represented Azlan.

On Monday, Azlan had been charged with committing an offence under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act.

He was alleged to have submitted false claims for flight tickets, accommodation and transportation costs in the UK, despite there being no actual travel.

He was granted bail of RM50,000 in one surety and was ordered to surrender his passport to the court pending the disposal of the case.

Under Section 24(2) of the MACC Act, Azlan will, if convicted, face a jail term of up to 20 years and a minimum fine of five times the value of the false claims.
