No more theory tests for vocational driving licences

Except for bus and lorry drivers, applicants only need to attend and complete theory classes before being issued a licence.

The scrapping of the theory test is aimed at improving the application process for vocational driving licences, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook. (Bernama pic)
PUTRAJAYA:
People applying for vocational driving licences will no longer have to sit for theory tests effective immediately, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

Loke said this was to improve the application process for vocational driving licences, which include the public service vehicle (PSV) licence and the goods driving licence (GDL).

“Applicants will only need to attend and complete their theory classes before being issued the licence,” he told a press conference here today.

“However, bus and lorry drivers are still required to undergo and pass their practical test.”

Loke also said theory classes can now be taken online through a platform provided by the road transport department (JPJ), driving institutes, or a JPJ-regulated and qualified intermediary business company.

He also said these driving institutes and business intermediaries must use the syllabus prepared by JPJ.

Loke said JPJ and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) will revise the syllabus used for all vocational licence categories after gathering feedback from the industry.

This is to ensure that the syllabus remains current and relevant in the future, he said, adding that this will be finalised within six months’ time.
