Ex-Hindu Sangam president withdraws libel suit against Ramasamy

RS Mohan Shan and the organisation had sued the Penang deputy chief minister over his response to a warning about a 'Thaipusam cluster' during the pandemic.

The withdrawal of the suit by former Malaysian Hindu Sangam president RS Mohan Shan (left) against Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy follows a similar move by the organisation last month.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Former Malaysian Hindu Sangam (MHS) president RS Mohan Shan has withdrawn a defamation suit he filed against Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy for belittling him as a religious leader over Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) during last year’s Thaipusam festival.

Mohan’s counsel, Rajesh Nagarajan, informed judicial commissioner Ros Mawar Rozain that his client did not intend to proceed with the case after re-evaluating the matter.

Ramasamy’s lead counsel, Shamsher Singh Thind, also confirmed the matter that was communicated to him earlier this morning.

Ros Mawar then struck out the suit with no order as to costs. Mohan will also not be allowed to file a fresh suit on the same subject matter.

The trial had been scheduled to run for five days beginning today.

MHS and Mohan filed the suit on March 8 last year, but the religious organisation withdrew the action last month on similar terms as today.

New office bearers have also taken over the management of MHS following its annual general meeting last month.

The suit stemmed from a Facebook post Ramasamy made in January last year.

The DAP leader was responding to Mohan’s warning about the danger of a “Thaipusam cluster” forming, especially since a new Covid-19 variant, the Omicron, had emerged.
